These yummy cheesy straws make a perfect addition to your snack platter.
Also just a great nibble to have on hand when sharing drinks with friends. Using our gorgeously tasty mature cheddar, they are quick and easy to make.
Makes about 30 straws, double the quantity for larger groups or just for a handy snack.
1 roll of puff pastry
5 tablespoons of sweet chilli sauce or a mixture of chilli, mayonnaise, garlic and herbs – choose your favourite
1 cup of grated fresh mature cheddar – mature cheddar is best because of the huge amount of flavour. In a pinch, normal cheddar can be used, but the cheesiness will be less intense
1 beaten large egg for the egg wash
Preheat your oven to 180˚C
Sprinkle some flour on your work surface and roll the puff pastry out to about half it’s thickness.
Using a butter knife, smear your chosen mixture (sweet chilli or chilli/garlic/herb combo) all over.
Cover with your grated cheese and fold your pastry in half.
Roll out again, very gently but firmly.
Brush with your beaten egg.
Using a sharp knife, cut into 1 to 2 cm wide strips.
Holding one end in each hand, twist your strips to make a spiral shape.
Place on a greased baking tray and bake for around 10 minutes.
They are ready when they are golden.
These are served at room temperature. They can be stored for a few days in an airtight container, but let’s be honest – there won’t be any left! Yum!
Enjoy with a glass of Rieslaner Auslener and good friends.
